One of UK’s largest online retailers, eXpansys, has announced that they will be offering the Acer Stream smart phone this coming August 9. The device is expected to bring in a new era of Acer devices.
While the Liquid series of Android smart phones from Acer was quite interesting, no other device from the computer manufacturer is as compellingly engrossing as the Stream. And by engrossed, we mean it in both the hardware and the form factor. The handset itself simply looks good –a definite first for Acer. While the beTouch and Liquid devices were decent smart phones, the Stream is a solid notch above all the rest. The phone’s form factor, color and texture give it a balance in design that is hard to deny.
Specs wise, the Stream matches up nicely with the Google Nexus One and the HTC Desire. The phone also packs a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, a 5 mega pixel camera, plenty of internal storage, the Android operating system (according to reports, will come loaded with Android 2.1 Éclair. An update to 2.2 Froyo is expected to be made available soon), support for GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, microSD cards and more. Basically, it’s the whole smart phone package.
Acer is also going to feature the Acer Touch 3D user interface. With the handset’s 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, running the graphics and effects on the handset will be a breeze.
With several Android devices already available on the market, Acer’s latest offering is a testament to how influential the Google operating system has become. It is expected that several more Android smart phone will be released before the end of the year, making this year the most prolific in terms of the number of Android devices released within the period.
Among the hottest newly launched handsets reaching the markets featuring Google’s Android as its operating system is Acer’s Liquid A1. The phone has been released in the markets in the UK and can be obtained from places such as Cove and Expansys. But why we talk about the handset right now is to share with you a video on the YouTube from TechnoloShree demonstrating the Acer Liquid A1 being unboxed.
Acer’s Liquid A1 can really tempt a lot of customers in the UK with its features. The phone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The only difference is that unlike handsets like the HTC HD2 and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, which feature a 1 GHz chip, it works at 786 GHz. Apart from that, the phone can offer its users 256 MB of RAM and no less than 510 MB of ROM. And of course you could always increase the memory using the SD memory card slot.
The great thing about this video is that shows you exactly what you get when you unpack a brand new Liquid A1; and what exactly would you find inside the box. To be specific, we can see the user manuals, the charger, an SD adapter and a Sandisk MicroSD card with 2GB space. But the real fun begins, when he turns the phone on. The Acer’s tailor-made Spinlets UI skin smoothly slides over the Android 1.6 version OS running the handset.
To tell you more about the Liquid A1, it features an impressive 3.5 inch capacitive touch-screen with a resolution of 800 x 400 pixels, really bringing the Android experience at its fullest. Apart from that, it also comes with a 5.0 mega pixel auto-focus camera, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and a GPS receiver. For those who are wondering about whether the phone can get an Android version 2.0 update, we don’t have any more info unfortunately, and the same goes to the US users who would like to give the phone a try.
HTC’s HD2 is getting great competition from Acer’s F1. Originally known as the neoTouch, this little Acer Windows Mobile phone got a name change when it came to the UK. The Acer neoTouch F1 is a touch screen Windows Mobile phone with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor making it the HD2’s direct competition as both devices use Snapdragon and the same operating systems.
The Acer F1 is made more for people who prefer to use Windows Mobile directly, as the phone uses only the Windows Mobile OS. The HD2 on the other hand, uses the HTC Sense interface for navigating the phone’s features and functions. The difference also affects the screen used by the phones as well. The HD2 uses a capacitive touch screen for its Sense interface while the neoTouch F1 uses a resistive touch screen for Windows Mobile users who would like to employ the use of their fingers and stylus input.
Plans
Right now, Acer neoTouch F1 contracts are available on both Orange Mobile UK and O2. The neoTouch can be availed of for free or for half price according to the different plans available. The device is also readily available on retail for 349.99 Pounds –a good price for a Snapdragon phone.
F1’s Hardware
This phone sports a nice 3.8 inch resistive touch screen display. Being resistive, the screen is able to detect both finger and stylus input –though it has no multi touch and the screen sinks a little when pressed. The camera is 5 mega pixels with LED flash, it can also capture VGA quality videos as well.
The Snapdragon processor runs at 1 GHz (though it has been reported to be over clock-capable in some tests). There is no physical keyboard so users have to rely on the onscreen keyboard –which some report says is hard to use.
News about the upcoming Acer F1 smartphone has hit our desks and it’s even more exciting than we could have hoped for. Since first catching sight of the handset shell (with it’s 12mm thin body and sleek black design) at a conference in February, we’ve been waiting for the full range of specs and evidence of what the phone is capable of. And it seems like this is a phone that’s going to do more than just attract wolf whistles for its good looks.
Not everyone took the famous computer manufacturer Acer seriously when they announced that they are entering the mobile phones market back in February, but we now realise they are more than serious. The Acer F1 (just a codename, so keep an eye out for possible name-changes) will be powered by the blazinginly fast Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Running at 1GHz (which although low by computer standards is mighty impressive for a hand-held device) this little thing will have enough horsepower to run the hottest software around, namely, Windows Mobile 6.5. The handset should also come with Acer Suite 2.0 UI, similar to HTC’s TouchFLO 3D.
The F1 will also come with a hi-res 3.8″ WVGA display, 3G with HSDPA and a 5 megapixel autofocus LED camera. Also onboard will be a built-in GPS, Wi-fi connectivity, an FM radio receiver and a handily situated 3.5mm audio jack. Industry rumour suggests we might see a release date as early as September, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long before getting your hands on this impressive piece of kit. We could go on, but this slick video says more than we can:
