Nokia is coming up with new N-series handsets and it will not be using the Maemo/MeeGo operating systems. Surprisingly, Nokia will be using the older Symbian operating system –or rather, not so old, as they will be using the new Symbian^3 operating system (the open source version of the OS).

For anyone who wants a Symbian handset, this device is a great addition. It brings together good multimedia playback, has plenty of internal memory, a great camera for taking images and shooting videos and a decent mobile platform that has support from the Nokia Ovi Store. As expected, this handset comes with AGPS support so expect to receive free Nokia Ovi Maps voice guided satellite navigation services as well.

For a touch screen smart phone, the N8 can be a little bulky. While the hard edged form factor is sure to attract tech fans, the back side of the device suffers from an unsightly lump because of the digital camera (though it looks rather nice in images).

In terms of specs, the device is pretty much well rounded with the exception of the CPU. The device sports a powerful 12 mega pixel snapper, a 3.5 inch OLD touch screen display, the Symbian^3 OS, 16GB of internal memory, support for microSD cards up to 32GB and plenty of media playback capabilities. It is lacking a little in the speed department with the ARM 11 680MHz CPU, so expect a bit of slowdowns when running resource heavy functions.

For its specs, the device is a respectable 12mm thick, though they could have done better by eliminating the excess bulk near the camera. And it is quite light -135 grams for a smart phone with these many features is actually pretty good.

Overall, it is a great phone to look forward to if you want a Symbian handset, but for those looking for a full smart phone experience, better hold out for an Android instead.

To say that the Symbian is an old, dying mobile platform would be wrong.

The Symbian OS may be old, but it has been continuously evolving and updating throughout the years to adapt to new and better technology. Just a few weeks ago, it has been announced that the Symbian OS would be going open source in order to attract more developers to making apps for Symbian.

According to the developers, open source Symbian is far more open than other mobile phones –allowing devs access to more hardware and software features than other open source platforms such as the Google Android. The Symbian Os is currently being used by various mobile phone manufacturers but mainly by Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

A recent announcement by Symbian will certainly bring a lot of delight to the OS users as the phone will be getting VoIP through the Skype software. The app is currently uploaded on the Nokia Ovi store. It’s a big help having access to VoIP since this will make calls a lot cheaper and easier to make.

People are encouraged to talk more since the cost of the call is completely free –when accessing free internet that is. When used overseas, the roaming charges on the internet access are pretty steep so users are not advised to use Skype when outside the country.

At the same time, access to the VoIP app is also limited to mobile network operators. O2 has taken steps to enforce the rules in their contract with subscribers preventing the use of streaming online technology –which includes VoIP.

Aside from making voice calls, Skype can be used as a regular messaging application to send and receive calls, messages, files and other info. Contact lists are saved online as well.

Nokia X3The Nokia X3 is one of the more recent phones to have been unveiled by Nokia during the Nokia World 2009. The phone will be released in the 4th quarter of 2009, perhaps in time for Christmas. Nokia X3 Reviews have been good, so let’s check out whether the phone actually lives up to its hype.

The large variety of phones that Nokia have is testament to the fact that Nokia have a phone for all segments of the market. In the X3, they have a very sleek phone with all the capabilities you could possibly expect of a phone of this price – range. The phone is about 14 mm thick and weighs in at 103 grams, making it easy to carry around in your pocket.

The TFT screen of the phone is 2.2 inches long and has a resolution of 240×320 pixels and is capable of displaying a maximum of 256k colours. The phone supports polyphonic as well as MP3 ringtones. The X3 has a 3.2 megapixel camera which is capable of capturing pictures with a maximum resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. There is an LED flash as well, enabling you to take pictures even in low light. Video recording is possible in QVGA quality @ 15 fps.

The music player is capable of playing a multitude of formats, which include MP3, WMA and AAC. MP4 and 3GP videos are supported. A stereo radio is also provided in the phone for those of you who like to listen to your favourite radio stations on the go.

On first looks, the X3 seems to be a low – cost version of the X6 due to the similar looks. However, the differences between the phone couldn’t be more stark when looking at the feature set of both the phones. There is a large number of functions in the phone, which makes it really good value for money and a phone which will be highly sought out in the market which is why there will be so many great Nokia X3 contracts to choose from as all the phone dealers compete for your custom,.

Nokia have always been the type of company who likes to dominate whatever segment of the mobile phone market that it is in and looks like they are looking towards dominating the laptop market as well with the introduction of the Nokia Booklet 3G, which was unveiled via a press release at Nokia Conversations.

Rude people might want to call it a fancy netbook, considering the fact that it has a 10.1 inch screen and an Atom processor, but the resolution of the screen is much better than normal laptops or netbooks. Another difference between this netbook and other ones is that it supports integrated 3G wireless and you can even use your data SIM directly with the netbook.

The netbook will be using the new Microsoft Windows 7 as its operating system, which is not something you’d normally see in a netbook. It also comes with integrated A-GPS and has the Nokia Ovi Maps pre – installed with the netbook.

Video output is redefined with the HDMI output. The netbook has an estimated battery life of 12 hours, which is useful as it will be able to keep you company during long journeys. The netbook also has Wi-Fi connectivity as well as Bluetooth connectivity. It is just 2 cm thin (.78 inch) and the aluminium body weighs only 2.7 lb, which is posh, understated and should make Nokia fans bristle with delight – i.e. Nokia fans who want a miniature laptop.

Nokia have also released a nice promotional video to coincide with the announcement of the Nokia Booklet 3G. Nokia Booklet 3G Reviews have revealed the pricing, which is set to be about £520, but you may be able to get it cheaper on contract with broadband providers, which is good news for all you Nokia fans out there. Make sure you do check out the Nokia Booklet 3G contracts on offer when it is released.

The Nokia 5230 is the latest touchscreen phone to emerge from the labs of Nokia and clearly shows that Nokia wants to have a touchscreen phone to cater to every segment of the market. The unveiling of this phone comes hot on the heels of the release of the Nokia 5530, which is targeted more towards the mid – range segment of the market. The Nokia 5230 Reviews haven’t been too bad, so let’s have a look at this device.

The Nokia 5230’s looks and dimensions are nearly similar to that of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. However, as far as features are concerned, the Nokia 5230 doesn’t have Wi-Fi internet connectivity and has a mere 2 megapixel camera.

Similar to the Nokia 5800, the 5230 makes use of a 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen. The resolution of the screen is 640×260 pixels. A FM radio, a microSD memory card slot and a 3.5 mm headset jack are present in the phone. The camera, which is 2 megapixels, is capable of recording videos at a fairly high quality VGA @ 30 fps.

The 5230 makes use of the Symbian S60 5th edition OS, which has been designed exclusively for Nokia’s touchscreen phones. The battery present in the 5230 is the same as the one in the 5800 (1320 mAh) and is much better than the 1000 mAh battery which comes with the 5530. You can listen music on the 5230 for a straight 33 hours.

The Ovi Maps feature deserves a mention, as does the social network integration, which includes Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

The phone hasn’t got a fixed release date but Nokia say it will be released during the 4th quarter of this year. The expected price is about 150 Euros (£140). If you want the Comes With Music service as well, you have to pay a totally of 256 Euros (£236). At that time there will be more information about Nokia 5230 contract deals.
