There is no denying that the upcoming Windows Phone 7 mobile platform is generating quite a buzz. The new OS is promising to deliver one of the most dynamic user interfaces, a fully comprehensive smart phone experience and of course, plenty of new integrated social networking features that does not only have access to Facebook, but also offers games and media sharing capabilities as well.
The WP7 OS was a surprise hit at the MWC last February that has gained quite a following since. In the past few months, Microsoft has slowly revealed even more details to the new OS. From the original Bing, Zune and Xbox Live Games trinity, the features of the new OS has been further expanded with new web services such as the MSN player, Silverlight and more.
According to a recently leaked document from Microsoft, it seems that retailers are being told to be prepared for a possible launch of the new WP7 handset this coming September. While a Q3 launch is not what Microsoft originally announced, it is pretty close to the original October launch date. This means that if Microsoft’s development is ahead of schedule, they might actually manage to release the OS a full month ahead of time.
However, as MS has yet to acknowledge the validity of the leaked document, we are still expecting WP7 and the first handsets to use it, to be available starting October.
Speaking of the WP7 handsets that are coming out; the LG panther is among the first of the devices to have been revealed to the public. And according to rumors, LG is already working on a couple more WP7 devices as well. So far, details on the rumored LG E900 and LG C900 handsets have not been released (nor have either two devices been confirmed).
As you might have already heard, the LG Panther has been recently distributed to a few developers who are working on new apps for the upcoming Microsoft mobile platform. The slider smart phone looks very much like the original demonstration unit used by Microsoft to show off WP7, with the addition of a chrome border around the screen and a slightly altered three button layout on the bottom of the device.
The big bonus on this touch screen smart phone is the slide out QWERTY keyboard. So far, LG is the only manufacturer that has announced a WP7 device that makes use of the type-2 chassis. All of the other devices that will be using this OS from HTC, Samsung and other manufacturers are reported to be using the type-1 chassis –which is the basic touch screen format.
The device got shipped in with a large box though it is believed that the retail version of the Panther will have a different packaging design as the print on the box did not reflect the new WP7 logo that we have come to expect.
Speaking of the new phone, it appears that users will have to install a specialized version of Zune in order to connect the device to a computer. No word yet if the final retail version will also use the same software, though this iTunes-esque phone syncing routine is a bad direction to go –and Microsoft should have known better.
As seen with the developer version of the device and the SDK tools, Silverlight will play a key role in the development of apps for the new OS. For now, developers are advised to focus strongly on apps that would enhance the user experience. Microsoft will be supporting the business experience later on (it is expected that new tools will also be released).
The names of phones often confuse, amuse or just downright annoy us here, but luckily the LG BL40 Chocolate is in the amusing category. Because with all the marketing and press release spiel about this thing focusing on its ‘tempered glass screen,’ on the ‘iconic red highlights’ to the ’seamless glossy black casing’, this thing is clearly being positioned as something of a sleek, cool, spaceship/sports car of a phone. But then it’s called Chocolate… Chocolate. Like the thing that kids smear all over their faces and fingers and on walls. The thing that melts in the sun. The thing that makes you fat.
And yes, we know, we’re not so uncultured (honestly) that we won’t know that chocolatiers have been making artisinal chocolates for years now, that the humble choc has, in certain circles, been elevated into a very expensive luxury. But, as an association for something that you hold in your sweaty hand, we just think that “chocolate” is a bit daft. But that’s just us. LG BL40 Chocolate = melting mess of sugar is not an image LG are probably hoping for here.

In fact, pretty much all this things got going for it is the physical QWERTY keyboard. But then, when you realise that because of all the things it hasn’t got it’s going to be insanely cheap (when it’s released later this year) and when you realise that certain age-challenged groups within this green and pleasant land like to use their thumbs a great deal to message / email / Facebook / Twitter… then you start to realise what a smart little plan LG have concocted to persuade these annually-deficient types (“youth” according to GSM Arena) to part with their “hard-earned” pocket money. Back in the day, pocket money for us was enough to get a couple of 10p bags of crisps and, if you were lucky, a chomp. These days, it seems, pocket money comes in note forms.
And if a pack of these “youths” fancy frittering their cash away on the LG GW300 then we say why not. All it means is that their Facebook status will be updated every 4 minutes rather than every 6 minutes. And if it keeps them from, well, mugging us, then we say it’s a good thing. As industries go, the mobile phone industry is, well, pretty pony at producing rumours about itself. Hollywood and the film industry: fantastic. The music industry: almost as good. Even book publishers manage to create airs of mystery about people who are so bereft of friends and social skills that they choose to spend all day every day indoors writing. Rather like us, as it happens…
But when it comes to their attempts to create mystery around phones, the likes of LG often get it comically wrong more often than they’ll even get it half right. Because despite their protestations to the contrary, despite that bleatings that the LG Louvre is ‘only a concept’ and ‘might never come out’ and blah blah blah all designed to make the gullible out there plead and clamour and write blogs about how this phone should definitely be released (therefore creating lots of free marketing, of course), isn’t it all just a bit suspicious? Because, first of all, the LG Louvre GC990 was featured recently at an exhibition in Warsaw. You know, the thing where you exhibit things, openly, for people to see. Then the thing itself looked about as finished as a phone gets, even to the point where it has that annoying writing along the camera-face telling the world exactly what your phone does, even though you know what it does and don’t need to tell anyone. ISO 3200. INTELLI-ZOOM. ZERO SHUTTER LAG. etc. and so on and so forth.
And then they go and officially deny it’s going to be released in an official statement. And as anyone who follows the world of films / music / football / anything-else knows, there’s nothing that says YES like an official statement that says NO.

Which makes us smile a little when we realise the slight truth-bending that’s going on with the use of that word exclusive. Bet hey ho, who are we to judge. If it’s true, as the old saying goes, that the devil finds work for idle hands, then various religious bodies should be buying the new LG GW520 on mass and handing them out to their congregations, but this handset is most definitely not for slack fingers and thumbs. With a large slide-out QWERTY keyboard, easy access to emails and social networking sites thanks to the 7.2mps connection capabilities, ‘push’ services, LiveSquare feature and tons more going on, the GW520 is very much a phone for people who are ‘always on.’
Although not raising the bar in any of it’s tech specs, the inclusion of push features – perhaps for the first time in a not-high-end phone (such as a Blackberry or iPhone) – is pretty impressive. Very much intended to grab the attention of those who might have several email and social networking accounts on the go at one time, the GW520 allows users to set-up the phone so it ‘pings’ you when new emails or updates on your accounts occur. There’s a LG GW520 review here that goes into this in more detail, but basically all you need to know is that this phone could – if you want it – let you ensure you know when an email or status update has arrived the minute it happens. And with certain features added by LG to help you get pictures you take up onto Facebook in a matter of seconds, the LG GW520 could be the phone you’re looking for if you can’t remember the last time you didn’t spend at least a couple of hours a day updating your status and keeping on top of your emails.
There’s something we quite like about the LG GT500 Puccini (probably being launched under the name LG Puccini any day now, though only on the T-Mobile network). But we can’t tell you what it is. It’s not that we’re trying to keep a secret, we jsut honestly aren’t sure why we keep smiling every time we look at the thing. It’s not that much of a looker – although it is slim at 12mm, and weighs an anorexic 86 grams. It’s not got much of a touchscreen at only 3.0” – but it’s functional enough with a nice bright display. It’s not that it’s got things other phones haven’t – in fact it’s got nothing at all of any note that five phones we could name already have. It’s just that… well… we’re not sure.
Maybe we’re just happy with the fact it doesn’t do anything badly. Like one of those parents who always expects the worst of their kids, and when they come home with straight C grades and no new scars on their faces the parent’s suddenly over joyed as though they owned a perfect child. And it does actually do some things well. The 5MP camera has more functions than we can remember, among which include some pretty nifty face recognition and geotagging options. The internet too should run along at a fair old speed thanks to LG GT500 Puccini’s smart choice of EDGE technology.
And, well, even in these days or more! more! more! we’re kind of impressed to see someone just go for a safe option. Far worse is a phone packed with more features, powerful gadgets and the hottest new operating system that, thanks to overarching desires actually freezes, crashes or outright explodes when you actually try and do all the things it’s supposed to do. And chances are the GT500 Puccini is not going to cost you anywhere near as much as some of these kind of phones.
