The list of reasons why you should consider forking out for the new Apple iPhone 3G S this summer is long. From the new processor and added RAM making everything run twice as fast, to the added megapixel on the still camera, to the additional of video recording (and editing), to the much improved battery life, to the spinny compass thing that everyone seems to be getting all excited about (has everyone taken up orienteering without telling us?) – but if you’ve already got the ‘S’-less iphone 3G, we don’t think there’s enough going on here to make you worry.
Yes, the transitions, web-loading and all round graphics performance is pretty damn impressive now. But then it wasn’t really that bad to start with. Yes, some people say the new graphics chip puts the games-playing capabilities up there with the PSP. Yes, it’s nice that you’ll be able to squeeze a juicy 30 hours of audio playback out of the thing. And, yes, if you really care that much, you can choose between white and black, and between 16GB and 32GB versions. But there’s nothing actually new about the iPhone 3G S. It’s just the same thing, done better. Luckily though, Apple were starting with a very (very) good place. The Apple iPhone 3G S is without question the best smartphone out there (and we won’t hear any arguments against that). But you should only be looking to upgrade if you’ve got the original iphone. Or if you’re about to enter the smartphone market for the first time.
Unlike countless phone-geeks around the world, we’re not going to begrduge (or blog-grudge, if that’s a word… it’s not? then it should be) Apple for only tweaking and improving rather than re-inventing. The massive, screaming hint is in the name, after all. All they’ve done is added an ‘S’. They’ve not called it The All New Super Exclusive Limited Edition iphone. So we think: leave them alone. If you want it (and believe us, it’s more than impressive), then buy it. If you don’t, then don’t. Just don’t waste your time bad-mouthing them online.

News about the upcoming Acer F1 smartphone has hit our desks and it’s even more exciting than we could have hoped for. Since first catching sight of the handset shell (with it’s 12mm thin body and sleek black design) at a conference in February, we’ve been waiting for the full range of specs and evidence of what the phone is capable of. And it seems like this is a phone that’s going to do more than just attract wolf whistles for its good looks.
Not everyone took the famous computer manufacturer Acer seriously when they announced that they are entering the mobile phones market back in February, but we now realise they are more than serious. The Acer F1 (just a codename, so keep an eye out for possible name-changes) will be powered by the blazinginly fast Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Running at 1GHz (which although low by computer standards is mighty impressive for a hand-held device) this little thing will have enough horsepower to run the hottest software around, namely, Windows Mobile 6.5. The handset should also come with Acer Suite 2.0 UI, similar to HTC’s TouchFLO 3D.
The F1 will also come with a hi-res 3.8″ WVGA display, 3G with HSDPA and a 5 megapixel autofocus LED camera. Also onboard will be a built-in GPS, Wi-fi connectivity, an FM radio receiver and a handily situated 3.5mm audio jack. Industry rumour suggests we might see a release date as early as September, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long before getting your hands on this impressive piece of kit.
